As a vegetarian, I found today's Vlogbrothers video quite fascinating. I no longer eat meat -- I actually stopped after December 31, 2021 as an experiment that was only supposed to last one year but has now been three (and counting). So I spent most of my life eating meat, and even grew up around hunters. I'm not judging. I'm just also glad I wasn't at that table.

Welcome back to Vlogbrothers Rewatch -- an ongoing series in which I document my full rewatch of the Vlogbrothers YouTube channel back catalog. Using this playlist, I'm rewatching one video every day, in chronological order, from the very beginning. We've made it through March 2007, and ther4e is so, so much more to go. No regrets.

Even if you're someone who doesn't personally support things like deer hunting or meat consumption in general, I think it's also important to recognize that culturally, across the United States, these are just things that some people do out of sport and/or necessity. You can advocate for plant-forward eating for environmental and economic reasons, and even practice that in your own daily life, while still understanding that not everyone can or will. I love my diet, but if meat were the only readily available and affordable thing, I'd adapt. We're humans; it's what we do.

I have to admit that the way he opened that bottle was beyond cool. And as a foodie, that meat did look delicious even if I'd prefer not to have it myself on principle. I also love how the point of this video is that just because something is stereotypically "manly" it doesn't mean you have to be a man to partake. An excellent stance to have both in 2007 and 2025, though now the idea is rightfully much more gender inclusive. No matter how you identify, you too can open a bottle with an elk antler and look extremely cool while doing it.
