I'm pretty sure most of us can agree that the best thing about MySpace was that you could set your profile pages to music. So whenever someone visited your page, either your favorite song or a song you made yourself would automatically start playing. I don't know why no other social media platforms have since implemented this feature (that I know of), but someone needs to fix that. Bluesky, you're a big deal now -- get on it.
Why am I talking about MySpace in 2024 (almost 2025)? Because according to Vlogbrothers Rewatch, it's actually February 2007 and Hank Green just created a Brotherhood 2.0 MySpace account that has exactly 69 (nice) friends. Vlogbrothers Rewatch is an ongoing series in which, using this playlist, I'm documenting my daily journey through the entire back catalog of the Vlogbrothers YouTube channel, in order, from the very beginning. Because it's fun! And quite nostalgic, if I'm being honest.
Hank's dream of seeing Brotherhood 2.0 grow significantly on MySpace is about as 2007 as it gets. Also, I spent an embarrassing amount of time googling "sparks fly up" because of Hank mentioning it in this video. It was the name of John's website because someone else had claimed johngreen dot com. But of course he now uses "johngreenbooks" dot com, which is much more SEO-friendly. For a minute, I thought it was an obscure social media website from the mid-2000s I'd never heard of before.
I was actually late to the MySpace game, and actually had a Facebook account before I joined MySpace. I think I made my profile page purple, and probably had my profile music set to a Taylor Swift song, or something from Disney. Again, I'm begging some social media app to bring the music back. The people (I) require it!
