I can't say I find myself regularly longing for Brotherhood 2.0-style content while watching old Vlogbrothers videos. But it's definitely moments like a clip from today's video that prompt me to miss the old days just a little bit. I'm referring, of course, to the part where John rolls down a hill while brushing his teeth. Come on. They just don't make them quite like this anymore.
Welcome, or welcome back, to Vlogbrothers Rewatch. This is an ongoing series in which I document my daily journey through the entirety of the Vlogbrothers YouTube repertoire from the very beginning. Using this playlist, I'm rewatching every video in order, one per day, until I catch up to current uploads. This first year of videos is obviously going to take quite a while, but things will move quicker once they're down to a two-videos-per-week uploading schedule. I'm in this for the long haul, and I hope you'll care to join me for the ride.
Another element of this video that really stood out to me was John's brief mention of a fund, and his asking Hank to match his pledge. An interesting note of foreshadowing, considering that eventually the Green brothers went on to create an annual fundraiser that generates millions of dollars for charity. Fundraising becomes such a huge part of their business in the years to come -- much more than a concert-going fund with a single $20 pledge.
The seeds were there, even way back in 2007. It really goes to show that you never know how things are going to turn out in even a year or two. What started out as mostly a joke actually became something world- and life-changing. Not that they could have known that then. They just wanted to be able to fund a few people's first concerts.
