VidCon announces Baltimore 2024 convention cancellation
By Meg Dowell
Online content creators and their fans will have to wait until next summer to experience another VidCon event.
The company announced via its social media accounts on July 16 that the Baltimore digital creator event, scheduled to take place at the end of September, had been cancelled. VidCon or any of its representatives have yet to give an explanation for the sudden announcement.
"We have made the difficult decision to cancel VidCon Baltimore to dedicate our full efforts and resources to our flagship event in Anaheim," VidCon's statement said. "Thank you for being a fan of VidCon. We will see you soon."
The company clarified that it will very quickly refund ticket purchases for anyone who paid for the event. There is no guarantee that anyone who already made travel plans and paid for transportation or hotel accommodations will get their full refunds three months prior to the event.
VidCon originally began as an annual event for digital creators and fans that took place specifically in Anaheim, California. The first event was held in July 2010, and continued annually even after Viacom acquired the company until its 2020 cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The next event wasn't held again until 2022.
The Baltimore 2024 event was supposed to occur in addition to the summer 2024 event in Anaheim to give those on the East Coast a chance to experience the benefits of interacting with other digital creators IRL. VidCon's statement appears to suggest finances at least somewhat contributed to the Baltimore event being cancelled.
VidCon offers a variety of panels and opportunities to meet content creators and online influencers at its multi-day events, giving creators space to learn, network, grow, and have fun. Its summer 2025 event is still in the works until stated otherwise, so if you've always wanted to attend a convention centered around digital creation and culture, this is the event for you.
