The Twitter block button is changing -- possibly forever

The block button may never be the same.

If you haven't been happy with some of the recent changes X (Formerly Twitter) has made to its app, you probably aren't going to like what's allegedly about to happen to the block button either.

The social media app is apparently considering changing the way its block button works. Rather than doing away with it entirely, its functionality will instead be altered slightly. Blocked accounts still won't be able to interact with your posts ... but those accounts will now still be able to see what you post.

The block button, particularly on X (Formerly Twitter), has always served two purposes for anyone using it. Not only does blocking an account prevent that account from interacting with you in any way whatsoever, but it also blocks your posts and profile from that account. Many users of the app specifically don't want blocked accounts to be able to see their activity at all.

And if you are wondering whether or not this is actually something Twitter can do, well, that's up in the air. As one user pointed out, this actually might go against the terms and conditions of the App Store and Google Play store.

According to the terms, apps containing user-generated content -- such as Twitter -- must contain a few specific safety features. In this case, apps like Twitter must allow "the ability to block abusive users from the service."

The actual meaning of this bullet point isn't 100 percent clear, but it could mean that Twitter has to keep the ability to block users -- not that it has to completely block your content from another account.

No official reason has been given for this possible update, and chances are we probably won't ever get one. There are theories online about why this change might have been presented in the first place, most of them having to do with the site's owner and how well the app is or isn't doing financially.
