John Green reacts to surprise Stephen Nedoroscik shoutout
By Meg Dowell
Olympic bronze medalist Stephen Nedoroscik has become a star both online and off over the past week, gaining the nickname "Pommel Horse Guy" and becoming a meme within hours of his first televised gymnastics routine in Paris.
Nedoroscik quickly gained online traction not just for his routine, but also because his specialty is "just pommel horse." It's the only gymnastics event he competed in for Team USA. He's not the guy the internet expected to see competing, and has since gone viral for that very reason.
Apparently, the Olympian is a reader -- when asked who the most famous person he'd interacted with online since entering the mega-spotlight was, he responded that it was none other than The Fault In Our Stars author John Green. John Green liked that response quite a lot.
Green was an author before he started making YouTube videos with his brother Hank in 2007 -- his first book Looking For Alaska released in March 2005. But both brothers have become largely known for their internet fame, beginning with the vlogbrothers YouTube channel and expanding across multiple online education endeavors, fundraising, and so much more.
His most recent book, Turtles All the Way Down, was adapted into a movie and premiered on Max earlier this year. It was the fourth book-to-screen adaptation of his work, following movies The Fault In Our Stars and Paper Towns and Hulu's 2019 Looking For Alaska series.
"THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY OF MY LIFE," Green quoted in response to learning Nedoroscik had mentioned him in an interview. "Love you @GymnastSteve!"
Green is a huge sports fan (mostly English football), but based on his Twitter page, he's been enjoying the Olympics just as much as the rest of us. It's great to see him back from his internet hiatus and finding joy in the little things (and Pommel Horse Guy).
