In the beginning of YouTube, shorter videos were the way to go. Over time, longer videos fell into favor. Now it seems a mix of both is the right thing to do for a lot of channels. But what's the right choice for you?

There are benefits to both shorter and longer videos, and which you choose depends on your long-term goals as a creator.

Short videos have less staying power

Short videos are now often the ones that most often go viral. People's attention spans are shorter and shorter content often offers the quick hit of dopamine internet users are after before moving on to the next thing.

But these videos, while often popular, offer short bursts of views that usually remain stagnant after that. If you only upload shorter videos, you'll end up having to do a lot more work to keep your view count going up.

Longer videos generate more views over time

While it's not as "fun" to think about things like SEO, it's an important consideration when you are trying to build a steady channel or brand. Longer videos often have the staying power shorter videos don't because they're usually more "evergreen." More people will find and watch them over time compared to shorter content.

Longer videos also have the opportunity to provide the in-depth information and insights shorter videos often don't have time for.

Mixing up your content is a recipe for success

It's best to post a combination of shorter and longer videos to give your audience options. This also allows your channels to generate continuous views -- large bursts of views for shorter videos paired with a steady incline in views on longer videos over time.

Switching between shorter and longer videos also gives you the chance to experiment while continuing to do what you know works best for your content and audience.
