Content creators should be free to rebrand

Content creators are people, and people change.

Every now and then, you'll witness a content creator change the way they approach their content. Maybe they switch up the type of content they make entirely, or maybe they shift the frequency with which they post new content.

People are afraid of change, even though deep down we crave it. Change is essential, even when it's scary. Content creators and influencers should be allowed to switch things up when they want or need to. Even when it's risky. Even when there are a dozen reasons they shouldn't.

I often feel frustrated that I've locked myself into only making one type of online content forever. (For reference, my niche is Star Wars books, and Star Wars fandom is having a ... moment right now, and not a good kind of moment.) Whenever I post anything that isn't related to my niche, it's crickets. It reaffirms that my followers never care about me and never will. They only care that I post cool pictures of books and show off my collection.

And I'm not the only content creator who feels this way. The world is a really tough place to exist in right now. Some of us are itching to break up our routines, do something different, focus on something new. But either our audiences don't want us to or the algorithm will discourage us from doing it. Because we are slaves to capitalism despite not having "traditional" jobs. And that may never change.

But I say do it anyway. Make the content you want to make. If it doesn't gain traction, then it doesn't gain traction. Will it make you happy? Will it make you feel fulfilled? Will it activate a spark inside you that hasn't been there in weeks; months; years?

To do something different is to give yourself permission to follow your passions and make art that makes you feel alive. I think we all need that. Even if you don't stop making the content everyone originally followed you for, that shouldn't stop you from trying something new.

You never know -- it could lead to something extraordinary.
